AidCamps International Project at SCAD

The first AidCamps International project at SCAD in January 2004 was a great success with the 19 volunteers financing a 108sq.m (1200sq.ft) extension to SCAD's boarding school for disabled children, providing a dormitory area, a dining area, a kitchen, a storeroom, and an interior courtyard with toilets and bathrooms for the children.
The construction was completed before the AidCamp, leaving the

volunteers to paint and then decorate the extension, which was done in grand style with jungle murals covering all of the interior walls of the living areas. The volunteers were also taken on quite a few visits to see SCAD's work for the rural poor in the area, as well as on several local and regional sightseeing trips, during one of which some of them got charged by a wild elephant!

Opportunity to volunteer at SCAD

AidCamps International is running two three-week voluntary work projects at SCAD during January and February 2005 to finance the rebuilding of the original part of SCAD's school for handicapped children. The bulk of the construction work will be done before the start of the project by local labour financed by the volunteers' participation fees. The volunteers will assist in the finishing and decorating of the building and other works on the school.

The project itinerary will also include local problem awareness outings --including a visit to the salt pans and villages and other SCAD projects -- as well as trips to local and regional heritage sites, national parks, and cultural centres.
Sik harvest at SCAD This is a unique opportunity for Salt of the Earth supporters not only to contribute, both financially and in a hands on manner, to a worthwhile development aid project, but also to get to know the people behind SCAD, witness some of the many other projects SCAD is involved in, and experience the culture and attractions of southern India.

The cost of participation is £550, of which 50% will go directly to SCAD to finance the construction of the building. The other half will be used to provide for the volunteers and to cover overhead costs.
The participation fee covers all accommodation during the three weeks, food while at SCAD, and all transport between the airport at Trivandrum and SCAD and back and during organised excursions. Flights, travel insurance, visas, etc are not included and are the responsibility of the volunteer

No special skills or experience are needed to volunteer for this project. The only requirements are that you are over 18, in good health, enthusiastic, and culturally sensitive.

All of the information relating to the project can be found on the AidCamps International web site at www.AidCamps.org. Those without Internet access can receive a printed copy of the information and application form by sending a large S.A.E. (A4 or A5 envelope, 41p stamp for 1st class post, 33p for 2nd class) to:
