Salt of the Earth Child sponsorship scheme

"Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much."
- Erich Fromm
Child sponsorship in India
The scheme is designed to support children aged from 5 to 10 years in some of the most disadvantaged villages that SCAD work in. Family income in these villages is well below the official Indian Government poverty level of £300 per annum.

Life is very hard in these rural poor villages. Work is uncertain, is seasonal in nature and often causes occupational health problems such as sight impairment.

The whole area is drought prone and fresh water in the villages is often only available for six months in the year.

Many families are permanently indebted to local money lenders who charge monthly interest rates of 10 to 15%. Up to 50% of children suffer some form of malnutrition which affects their growth, health and learning ability.

Sponsors are asked to pay a minimum of £12 per month for at least the five years it takes for the child to finish his or hers primary education. Every penny of this money will be sent direct to India and it will be used to help the child in many ways. Money will go to directly benefit the child's health and education, their family and community. This could mean the building of a local well, provision of low cost housing, regular local medical and eye camps and low cost loans for debt alleviation and income generation.

Sponsors will get an initial dossier on the child and the scheme and then receive twice-yearly correspondences from the child, one of which will be a festive greeting in December. Six monthly updates will be sent which will include information about the child's progress as well as an annual update on projects being implemented by SCAD. In addition sponsors will get the charity's own twice yearly newsletter.
