‘‘ASHTANGA YOGA and AYURVEDA
- AYURVEDA FOR THE ASHTANGA WORLD’’

Antony Prem Carlisi
Yoga enhances the vibrancy of our body, heart and mind. Meditation cultivates a realization of our essential nature—our innate clarity. Both systems bring us home to ourselves. Taking time away from our busy schedules to commit our attention to our inner development naturally accelerates our evolution, while also bringing us into new and refreshed ways of being with ourselves and our life.

‘TRADITIONAL ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA
- THE PASSION and THE FUN
- the impact of a regular practice on Mind, Body and Spirit’
Saturday 15th April, 2006 - Friday 28 April, 2006

Ashtanga for all levels, combined with a study and exploration of Ayurveda
and its relationship with yoga and you.
(students can attend for one week only if they wish, however two weeks is recommended)
Both residential and non-residential places are available on this workshop.

Anthony 'Prem' Carlisi began studying Ashtanga Yoga when Sri K. Pattabhi Jois came to California for a 6 month stay in 1978. The following year, he traveled to Mysore, India, where he completed the traditional Advanced A series (currently 3rd and 4th series) with Guruji. Prem is one of Guruji's original western students along with Norman Allen, David Swenson, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff, Brad Ramsey, Gary Lopedota, and Tim Miller. In February 2005 Prem was officially certified by Pattabhi Jois as an Ashtanga Instructor, meaning he is able to teach ALL levels of students. (Please Note: This is different from being 'authorized' in that 'authorized' instructors are only allowed to teach Primary Series.)

In 1983 Prem initiated a 3-year course of study with Dr. Vasant Lad, the world renowned Ayurvedic practitioner and author, at The Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received his certification in 1986 and completed a full term of Residential Clinical Internship with Dr. Lad. Prem also studied with Dr. David Frawley and Dr. Robert Svoboda while studying at AI. He has kept up his clinical expertise over the Years and has given numerous workshops on the value of Yoga and Ayurveda being taught together.

Prem has shared his knowledge of Ashtanga Yoga and Ayurveda over the past 27 years with thousands of people from all walks of life. Some of the more notables are: actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianna Margulies, Jennifer Garner, and Pierce Brosnan; Ron Eckard, NBA coach and author Pat Riley, Chris Martin of the band Coldplay, gold-medal decathlete Dan O'Brien, best selling author and TV personality Dr. Dean Ornish.

AYURVEDA FOR THE ASHTANGA WORLD

Ayurveda is defined as ‘the science of life.’ It is essential to incorporate ayurveda into your daily routine if you truly want to benefit from yoga. This special two week Ashtanga Yoga & Ayurveda workshop will give participants an opportunity to explore the benefits of combining the ancient wisdom of ayurveda along with the Ashtanga yoga method.
You will learn to customize your yoga practice to suit your personal constitution. In the six morning classes each week (Sunday to Friday), Prem will lead workshop participants through led primary classes as well as provide one-on-one guidance through Mysore-style practice sessions where he will incorporate the principles of ayurveda. The morning classes will encourage participants to see their practice through the eyes of ayurveda.
The four afternoon lectures each week (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) will consist of more in depth discussions, details, and analysis of the Ayurvedic method and how one can apply it to their practice and their daily lifestyle. Afternoon classes will consist mainly of discussions of key topics in ayurveda, including constitutional analysis, making wise diet choices for your personal constitution, and how to customize your ashtanga yoga practice.

This workshop is suitable for any level of yoga practitioner except complete beginners. (Some understanding of linking breath and movement is essential, but accomplishment in yoga asana work or particular flexibility is not necessary.) Each student will receive individual help and suggestions according to their specific problems and challenges. More advanced Ashtanga practitioners and teachers will find plenty of opportunity for self-practice, and will learn many techniques that they will be able to integrate into their own classes. Prem will be available to discuss individual issues with the students outside the classes, and will be joining students during most mealtimes.

Novices will benefit from this workshop as much as seasoned practitioners both of whom can enhance their yoga experience by tailoring it to their personal constitution’s needs.

This workshop is designed as a two-week experience for those seeking to develop their understanding of yoga and ayurveda combined. This is a challenging and very educational workshop that will be rewarding for anyone who comes with an open heart and willingness to grow.

Massages are available from qualified Ayervedic massage practitioners on site.

Students can arrive at The Purple Valley Retreat Centre after 2pm on Saturday 15th April 2006, and are requested to be there before 6pm in time for a Greeting, Introduction followed by Dinner at 6.30pm.
Rooms can be vacated after breakfast on Friday 27th April, and students are requested to have vacated by mid-day on Saturday 28th April, 2006.
Students taking the first week only should depart before 10am on Saturday 21st April, and students arriving for the second week only should not arrive until after 2pm on Saturday 21st April.

Purple Valley Yoga Retreat is located in a semi-rural part of North Goa, about 3kms from the sea. The Retreat is purpose built and all students live on site. What people have said about Anthony 'Prem' Carlisi's workshops:

'Anthony Carlisi is a wonderful teacher of Ashtanga yoga. His many years of practice and study have given him a very deep understanding of Ashtanga. He approaches from a place of profound spirituality and connection with the true purpose of the practice and what it is supposed to achieve. His experience deepens the students experience. He helps to align the mind with the physical body through his teachings. The asanas are quickly strengthened under his tutelage. He is also very knowledgeable about Ayurvedic medicine which I believe gives him more insight into the body/mind/spirit connection. Practicing with Anthony immediately connects one with the true depth and meaning of this very special form of yoga.'
Gwyneth Paltrow

'Anthony was my first yoga teacher and gave me the ideal starting course; he was patient and kind and really took the time to explain things. I was deeply suspicious when I started but that suspicion soon evaporated. He is a lovely guy and a great teacher, and everyone would benefit from taking lessons with him.'
Chris Martin, Lead singer of band Coldplay

'Raghava (Anthony) is one of my oldest and dearest friends in the Ashtanga Yoga community. We met 25 years ago when we were both neophytes in the yoga world. Anthony brings a depth of experience and insight to his teaching that only a quarter century of practice can bring. Along with his vast experience of practice and teaching, Anthony also has a thorough knowledge of Yoga's sister science--Ayurveda. The combining of these methodologies is a great boon to the student. Anthony brings a light hearted and playful approach to yoga and life that is delight to be around.'
Tim Miller, Ashtanga Yoga Teacher
